In this edition of PLAC Beam we focus on poverty and inequality in Nigeria. Over recent decades, Nigeria’s poverty figures have continued to indicate worsening conditions for an ever increasing segment of the population.

One of the infamous milestones Nigeria achieved was overtaking India in 2018 as the country with the highest number of people living in extreme poverty globally, according to a study by the U.S. Brookings Institution. As recently as 2020, the National Bureau of Statistics released data showing that 40 percent of the population of over 200 million were officially poor.

Those numbers relied on data collected in 2019, well before the Covid-19 pandemic. There are indications that the pandemic and associated disruptions pushed another seven million Nigerians into the poverty belt.

PLAC Beam approaches the matter from different directions. We provide a cover story painting the current state of affairs. Then we present conversations with important figures in the non-profits community that are in the forefront of the fight against poverty, including those running food banks to feed those in most need. Being central to the conversation, we also present the views of ordinary Nigerian women, who talk about their daily realities of unrelenting struggle to put food on the table.

Apart from these, the reader can still count on the traditional provision of useful knowledge that might come handy in practical ways while one is navigating daily life. One of them is our focus on taxes and the tax authorities, which provides a broad range of information on tax obligations due to both the individual and organizations. There’s also the recommended reading on the Jollof Rice Index published by SBM Intelligence, which tracks the cost of what it takes to cook a pot of Jollof rice. It helps you watch the impact of inflation on your pocket.
